We got a chance to sit down with Dan from usedtobecool and asked him a few questions about what him and Ross do. It was quite the thing to be talking to some of the best breakcore artists in the United Kingdom (maybe the world).
Q: How did you get into music?
A: "We've always been into music, and we've been into breakcore for as long as we can remember. We got into making music about 4 years ago, i've been djing for years but decided im not going to get anywhere unless i write my own tunes, and me and ross decided there was a lack of good breakcore out there so teamed up. We got a copy of reason and started spending weekends pissing around together making horrible noises. After some equipment upgrades, software upgrades, and hard grind, we were ready to release our first demo."
Q: What inspires you when writing?
A: "Quite often its a night clubbing that inspires new music to be made. A wonky night on the dancefloor bouncing around to great breakcore and you find yourself going home with rythms going round your head and want to get cracking on more of your own tunes asap."
Q: What do you use to create your music?
A: "We sequence our tracks on Ableton Live. We have a few bits of hardware too, a Virtus TI desktop synth, a Sherman filter box, a tb-303 (old skool!) and some other bits we dont really use anymore."

ALBUM: ONLY INSERT IF YOU GET A DEFINITE YESThis album was released in 2008 and shows a more "serious" side to usedtobecool, at least in our opinion. Only Insert if You Get a Definite Yes is THE album to drive rediculously fast too after you've had a couple beers and like to imagine you're being chased by aliens that drive pimped out Honda Civic's. I think you can imagine just how life-impacting that situation can be. |

ALBUM: I CAN'T BELIEVE I USED TO LIKE THOSE GUYSReleased in 2007, we believe this album shows the fun and crazy side of usedtobecool. You might even call them delinquent tracks created by a toddler, produced by Jesus, remastered by the Mario Brothers, and packaged by Mohamed Ali. If you couldn't follow that, it means it's extremely bad ass. Everyone here at Cut Me Deep rocks out to this album on a regular basis. |
